This paper examines the territorial transformations and conflicts associated with the expansion of maritime river ports in the Brazilian Amazon, focusing on two medium-size cities : Barcarena and Itacoatiara. Situated within the "Amazonian Arc", these cities have become strategic nodes in the export of bulk commodities, particularly soybeans, minerals and oil, reflecting Brazil's growing integration into global supply chains.

The study combines a municipal-scale time-space analysis of land cover and land use (LCLU) data from MapBiomas (1985-2024) with a multi-scalar spatial analysis of port infrastructures and their urban environments. This approach is complemented by documentary research on port concessions and planning frameworks.

Results reveal a significant expansion of urban and industrial land in both cases, accompanied by increasing pressure on forested and hydrologically sensitive areas. While Barcarena exhibits a highly integrated industrial-port configuration, Itacoatiara reflects a more enclave-based logistical model. In both contexts, port development is associated with emerging socio-environmental conflicts and growing exposure to environmental risks. Interpreting these dynamics through the lens of planetary urbanisation, the paper shows that Amazonian river ports operate as key infrastructures of global commodity circulation, reshaping urbanisation patterns beyond metropolitan centres and contributing to new forms of territorial reconfiguration in tropical fluvial environments.

This special issue emerges from the Ottoman Parallax gathering (11–13 June 2026, Ankara, Türkiye), which brought together artists, scholars, cultural practitioners, activists, designers, and community organizers to examine how artistic and communicative practices contribute to more just, plural, and sustainable futures amid ecological, political, and epistemic transformations.

At a time when dominant institutional narratives and political imaginaries appear increasingly exhausted, the issue explores how art, visual culture, media, and creative practice can help reimagine collective life, foster dialogue and community engagement, and more plural futures.

The collection foregrounds situated cultural expressions, Indigenous and vernacular artistic practices, visual storytelling traditions, and community-based knowledge production. It examines how artistic, visual, and communicative practices represent, negotiate, and transmit alternative cosmologies, relational ways of being, and local understandings of governance, ecology, and coexistence. Across diverse contexts, communities are generating new ways of representing, preserving, and transforming collective experience in response to homogenizing structures of power.

We are particularly interested in the transmission and representation of cultural practices, values, and relationships—human and more-than-human—that have evolved over generations. How are these worlds expressed through art and culture ? Why are aesthetics and creative practices central to community identity, celebration, resilience, and continuity ? We also welcome contributions that examine how artistic and communicative practices enable these forms of knowledge to be shared, interpreted, and sustained across communities.

Contributions are invited that explore how art, design, media, and cultural production challenge colonial epistemologies, technocratic rationalities, while creating new possibilities for communication, representation, public dialogue, and collective imagination. Topics may include Indigenous arts, vernacular visual cultures, creative resistance, community arts, participatory communication, cultural memory, decolonial aesthetics, ecological imagination, and creative approaches to environmental and social justice.

By creating a platform for voices, images, stories, and practices often marginalized within mainstream institutions, this issue seeks to advance debates on decolonial aesthetics, artistic activism, cultural resilience, ecological imagination, visual culture, participatory communication, and the transformative potential of art-based community engagement.
The issue welcomes theoretical, empirical, interdisciplinary, and practice-based contributions from scholars, artists, activists, designers, practitioners, and community organizers worldwide.

Abstract

This article examines how the planetary circulation of commodities produces new regimes of spatial injustice and disposability, focusing on the Amazonian port city of Barcarena, Brazil. Situating its analysis within critical urban studies, it introduces the concept of necropolitical zones - territories where exposure to death is not accidental but structurally organised through infrastructures, regulations, and economic imperatives. Drawing on Achille Mbembe's notion of necropolitics, as well as frameworks from environmental humanities and logistics urbanism, the article traces the conceptual evolution of the “zone” from technological and critical to sacrifice and necropolitical forms. This genealogy reveals how global supply chains transform landscapes into operational infrastructures of extraction and exposure. Through a combined methodology of theoretical analysis and critical cartography, the study maps the spatial evolution of Barcarena over three decades, correlating industrial expansion, residential sprawl, and environmental degradation. Recurrent industrial accidents - chemical leaks, tailings spills, and toxic contamination - illustrate the systemic nature of risk and the institutionalised indifference that sustains extractivist urbanisation. The mapping approach highlights how these transformations materialise the logic of necropolitical planning, where economic imperatives outweigh the protection of life and environment. In its final section, the article explores how architecture and territorial practice can act as forms of ethical and political repair. By reinterpreting mapping as a tool of visibility and care, it proposes an architectural approach attentive to vulnerability, coexistence, and the relational ecologies of the Amazon. Ultimately, it argues for the recognition of Amazonian urban-diversity as a non-hierarchical framework for reimagining coexistence and spatial justice within the damaged landscapes of the Capitalocene.

The contemporary world is characterized by the interweaving of various networks, including biological, ecological, social, technological and energy-related networks. We are constantly engaged in interactions with these networks. In the context of energy and ecological and social transitions, it is essential to examine the positive or negative effects of these interactions. Additionally, it is crucial to explore the influence of the growing role that networks will play and the open or closed futures they will shape.

To address these issues, a multidisciplinary approach is essential, particularly between the technological sciences, humanities and life sciences. Rethinking Networks in Times of Transition analyzes and discusses four major themes : ecological networks in biodiversity and ecological transition ; socio-technical changes related to energy networks ; how social and controversy networks are transforming lifestyles, representations and modes of action ; and finally, how academic networks can play a leading role in the transition.

Chapter 15 : Towards an Ecology of Architectural Experimentation Beyond Environmental Regulatory Standards

by Hector Docarragal Montero

In 2021, the European Commission launched the “Fit for 55” package as part of its broader strategy to combat climate change. This legislative initiative sets a legally binding goal for the EU to cut net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030. Achieving these EU-wide targets raises important questions about how local governments can reconcile top-down climate directives with bottom-up, context-specific and experimental approaches. In France's construction sector, the gradual of thermal and environmental regulations (RT 2012 and RE 2020) has led to a proliferation of performance certification protocols in the building sector. These protocols aim to promote an exemplary model of environmental efficiency, integrated into the various stages of project design.

In response to this increasing dominance of environmental standards, a new local architectural trend is emerging – one that explores innovative, frugal, transgressive and often “out-of-standard” ecological practices. Initiatives such as La Preuve par 7, Bellastock, Le Grand 8, Méandre Etc, Plateau Urbain and Le Hangar Zéro exemplify emerging creative possibilities within experimental frameworks. Drawing on what Michel de Certeau termed “tactics of resistance,” these practices challenge the prevailing model of “green” standards in favor of alternative approaches to designing environmentally efficient buildings. However, in the absence of a suitable regulatory framework, these projects often evolve intuitively, operating on “trickery”2 and inventive margins of normative structures in order to accelerate implementation.

The growing interest of the French State in such experimental strategies is reflected in the institutionalization of new protocols allowing exemptions from standard building regulations, thus encouraging innovation. These can already be observed in laws such as Law on the Freedom of Creation, Architecture and Heritage (LCAP)3 and Law for a State at the Service of a Trusted Society (ESSOC)4, which aim to “simplify construction rules” to “facilitate project realization and foster innovation5”. This experimental framework lends legitimacy to the ongoing debate about the need for a legal system that can rethink environmental performance beyond the prescriptive boundaries of the Code de la construction eut de l'habitation, the foundation of French building regulation. But what are the implications when the law itself legitimizes exemption – effectively turning deviation from established norms into a new standard practice ?

In light of the urgent demands of the ecological transition, there is a growing need to adapt existing regulatory frameworks – such as RE 2020 – and institutional mechanisms for experimentation, including the ESSOC and LCAP laws, to better support innovative and experimental approaches in architecture. This shift calls for a deeper transformation in perspective : moving beyond the creation of ecological frameworks for individual projects towards cultivating an ecology of the project itself. In other words, can we begin to imagine a politically grounded, experimental ecological framework – one that acknowledges the complex interplay of human and non-human actors that bring a project into being ? Such a framework would create space for diverse ecological imaginaries to take shape, spanning from the hyperlocal to the global. This is the core ambition of this chapter. By proposing a broader structure for knowledge exchange, the research expands the representational scope of the CAST cartography of ecological imaginaries. It is grounded in the “out-ofstandard” experimental practices that define the architectural projects examined here. Ultimately, the ethnographic approach seeks to establish a shared platform for dialogue and critical reflection – one attuned to the evolving, everyday environmental challenges highlighted in recent IPCC reports.

Abstract
This article brings together the knowledge fields of architecture and semiology. Considerations are presented on the construction of an interpretive frame that is able to grasp the particularity of architectural signs in urban context, specifically the enclosure of urban spaces of nature. The semiological model is expanded with an body phenomenology approach, complemented with considerations by Roland Barthes and Françoise Choay and contextualized in the Parisian urban space. A reading of the architectural enclosure of the Parc André Citroën in Paris clarifies the shaping ability of this architectural typology to produce a comprehensible entity based on an inner context. The definition and communicability of this place then participates in the (re-) establishment of the park as an urban element in the city.

Since Western postmodernism sparked awareness and shaped our governance and lifestyle at the turn of the millennium, Global North ecosophies have attempted to grasp the ecological and ontological crises, creating their own performative narratives in the process. Pervasive throughout all modes of thought about our relationship to the world, environmental consciousness is part of political ecologies and contemporary hermeneutic. From design philosophies to laws and representations, everyone has an opinion on how we should manage our biospheres. This has led to the global south being flooded with Western ethics, which are often hostile to them in the manner of imperialist modes of operation. Even more astonishing is the versatile plasticity of these conceptual changes, which are less disruptive than radical and pursue the same resilient environmental ethics that gave rise to them. Thus, the world of contemporary art is flooded with thinkers of a new ecological aesthetic modelled on the genesis of the Anthropocene era. The era of neoliberal ecological aesthetics in communication design has thus become a soft power advocacy for Western imperialism, much like built environment experts who damage the world they claim to protect. It glorifies a myriad of empowering narratives of the corporate, privileged, wealthy and educated elite, reminiscent of the aristocrats of past Western imperial empires. In an era of mutating environmental aesthetics, we will explore the foundations and issues of these ecosophical alternative realities that perpetuate indifference towards both humans and non-humans. We will also examine how contemporary ecological relativism is leading new generations to disengage from generic communication design and embrace other existence praxis.
